Hello,

Can anyone recommend a good first book on 5 Element hand reading and a good *first* book on fingerprints?

With thanks,

Hi Emma,

do you want to go to books directly?
There are plenty of material online.
Hope you have referred them.
However, my personal recommendation is to go for Jennifer Hirch's books for both.
She 5E expert.
Note: I myself havn't read her books. But, have gone thru the samples available in her website and have read her blog.

Recommened you to visit her website and glance thru the samples of the books.

Warm regards,
Kiran

I go with Kiran's recommendation of Jen's book. Also Johnny Fincham 'Spellbinding Power of Palmistry'- although he doesn't specifically talk about the elements in detail, he uses all the principles in his work.

Thank you both. I have Johnny Fincham's books (and just taken his Passionate Palmistry course, which was brilliant). Thanks for the recommendation of Jennifer Hirsch's books. I had considered them, but with two recommendations I think I'll take the leap!

Best wishes,

Emma I am so sorry I didn't notice who I was replying to the other day! Of course I recognise your name 'beelights', nice to put a face to the name! Smile Great that you have joined us on the forum, and fantastic that you made it to Johnny's course. Very Happy
hmmm, Ok,,,,, so,,,, that is four times this week that I have spoken to people who have previously asked about my correspondence course. Maybe the Universe is giving me a nudge to finish writing it! Wink

Hello Lynn!

I was going to pester you again about the correspondence course, even to suggest that you might consider writing it as we go, no pressure though, lol..!

My library is growing. I managed to find a copy of Charlotte Wolff's book at a very reasonable price, and a slightly elusive Beryl Hutchinson in a second hand shop.

Best wishes,

well done Emma, you've got two classic books there! Beryl Hutchinson is one of my favourites, and whilst I'm not given to having 'heroines', if I did Charlotte Wolff would be up there in my list with Boudica/Boadicea Laughing

"writing it as we go" .... well thanks for the offer of being my 'guinea pig', that is a very tempting idea! Recommendations please! 964784 Recommendations please! 478581
It might actually get me to finish the course at last, after 10 years of procrastination, if I had a deadline to work to! Smile It's basically been written for ages, cos I can base it on the course I teach at home. I've just not got around to scanning in the handprints to illustrate it, nor writing the exercises for homework assignments, and maybe it needs a bit of re-structuring. Actually there are two courses, beginners palmistry and 5-element hand analysis. Was it the 5-element one you were interested in?

Hi Lynn, Emma,

At times, I feel like purchasing these older books.
But, is it required to have them when many new authors have condensed the info from several books and have come up with new and latest finding books?
Take - Johnny, Richard, Jennifer, Ed Campbell, Pamelah, Ronelle, and plenty of online materials( pdfs, audio) downloadable with price at IIHA.

Do these old books deal anything in detail/depth?

Emma, please don't take my comments personally. This is a generic question, which I have had from a long time. Since the context arrived here, I am posting this.

Hello Lynn,

I am tempted to say 'both' but I think the 5-element would be the one. But if the Palmistry is a precursor, then perhaps that first? I would be guided by you. I consider myself a complete beginner. Emma ~

Hello Kiran,

Forgive me answering two posts in one! I certainly didn't take your comments personally. I think it is an interesting question. I do love old books as objects in themselves, for their antique and curiosity value. Long before I became interested in the modern practice of hand reading I collected antique palmistry books. However, in my opinion as a novice, I think there is something to be got from reading the early precursors of scientific/modern hand reading. As someone with a 'researcher's brain' I like to know the source of things before they are interpreted to suit a particular thesis. But certainly, if I had only one or two books to buy from which to learn, it would be one of the recent ones.

With best wishes,

Emma

Emma, I think it's good to learn traditional palmistry before studying the 5-element hand analysis. OK, I'll work on it!! Smile

Kiran, No, they're not necessary, but they are interesting! I like Beryl Hutchinson's book, she was one of the first to write about palmar dermatoglyphics.
Charlotte Wolff's books are good if you are interested in the scientific studies she did on the hands of people with mental handicap & mental illness.

I think that the more you actually read hands (rather than books) the more you'll realize that there isn't a book written that is complete.

Hello Emma,

I too believe what you have shared. Its nice and feels great to look at the views of palmists some 100 years back or more.Once we have the collection we can relate chronologically how things have changed in palmistry since. Moreover the basic nature of human beings for the inherent traits have fairly changed in 100 years. So what the early masters have said can not be omitted completely.

And an old and a second hand antique book has its own charm to an online material.Price is offcourse what you pay to make the collection of antique books.

Hi Lynn, infact, after posting my first post, where I questioned the need to read these books, I read about wolff from Johnny's website. Yup, I think I need to collect he Hand in Psychological Diagnosis. Good to know that there are collection of cases in that book.

Hello Kiran,

My library is growing dangerously large...I can see how this becomes an addiction! What about you? Do you have many books or do you mostly draw on information on the internet? I have found some invaluable sources online, such as Christopher Jones' history of hand reading.

I am laughing because I too looked close-up at Patti's book collection to see if there were any I had missed :-)

Best wishes,

Emma

Hello Emma,
Earlier,I used collect the all time great novels like Sherlock Holmes series, Doctors & Love Story by Eric Segal, Dan Brown's books and some great local authors. Later, I realized that once I read them I never touch them again and no one else at home read them which started pricking my paper consumption conscious mind and I stopped! However, I created a friends circle - where we rotate books/one of purchases!

About palmistry, "right now" - I amn't interested in knowing the history. Literally, I want the latest knowledge in this field so that I can go out, express myself and create my niche.
Couple of weeks back, I sold couple of books of Cheiro! Now, I have around 10-12 books which are latest/specific to subject: like Johnny's 2 books, Richard's fingerprints, Jennifer's "Craft of Handreading", Behham's 2 books, Practical Palmistry by David Jones, Palmistry and Inner Self by Ray, Disease imprints on palm by Verma and Kattakar's book. That's it.

And my main source is INTERNET. Oh! my god - there are so many blogs and websites. And I am speaking about reliable resources like teachers of IIHA, Johnny, Jennifer, Chirstopher, Martijn. Excellent material and quite sufficient. This forum itself has so much of content in it. Just read replies of expert's here( you can even see the history). You'll learn plenty!

Infact, I wanted to suggest Marijn, Lynn and Patti as why don't they publish a book from the discussions and information from this website itself. It will be of great source of knowledge for many budding palmists(Also for experts).

Hello Kiran,

My views differ on this.I believe for subject like this we must look at what made the author say so.What was the idea precedent to the present one.So we need a chronology. And all the modern authors may have developed their idea only after they knew deleberately what was before them and how they can change or present a different view.
What is latest today may not be latest a few years after.

Richard webster in his very elementary book "Palmistry for beginners" has mentioned that he even visited China to look for how the chinese do the hand reading. But there is no mention of Chinese methods in the book.So even if there is nothing of old techniques in the books of the new authors,I fairly doubt that they do not know of the old palmistry theories. Some may be experts on them.

Any book written takes years of studies and painfully collecting and observing and then putting a theory on paper. So they may not be as sinple as you think them to be.Here I am only speaking of those who genuinely look to write something in Palmistry.

Regards
Raman

Hi Raman,

I agree on all the points you have written. I amn't denying the efforts and the knowledge of the writers. The only thing is I don't want to get into the history of it right now - time, need and interest constraint

I believe, this subject has 2 aspects to it:
1. Learn the subject (Present Proven Knowledge)
2. Understand its history(Past) and do/keep an eye on research and latest findings(Future).

My current efforts are on "1. Learn the subject (Present Knowledge)"
I would surely get into "2. Understand its history(Past) and do/keep an eye on research and latest findings(Future).", but not now and not sure when Smile

Its like any other subject we are taught school. We are taught only that which is already confirmed and proved and has become essential part of the knowledge.
Moreover, holding another career in hand, I don't get time to learn the present content itself! Smile

Yes Kiran. Can understand very well on above. Its not easy for sure to juggle between two.
But I am sure as years roll by you will have a much larger library than what you have. And this I guess will be without anyone tell you day dreaming .
