What does it mean when someone folds their hands over each other, not intertwining.

Hello Jeanette!

Thank you for your question.

But I am wondering what do you exactly have in mind? For example... are you talking about the gesture that you see in the picture below?

By the way, remember Kenneth Lagerström's conversation with Dr. Susan Goldin-Meadow about hand gestures?

An interesting aspect of their conversation was that Susan described that behavior specialists usually do not wonder about the question: 'what does a gesture mean?' ... they are more focussed on the issue of in what situations do people use certain hand gestures.

And that is just probably because the meaning of gestures is also determined by culture, for example: the "thumbs up" gesture ( hand gestures 898444 ) is in many western cultures recognized as a 'positive' gesture ... but in countries such as: Iran, Irak, Thailand, Bangladesh (+ many countries in South-America & West Africa) it is generally recognized as... (hand gestures 148122) ... an 'obscene' gesture!

More details are described here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thumbs_up#The_gesture_internationally

So, I think a rather general answer to your question should become anyway ... that the meaning of any gesture really depends on the context: Who makes the gesture? And in what situation?

Anyway, Jeanette I am looking forward to your specification about what exactly you have in mind...

Jeanette, is this an example of 'folded hands - not intertwined'?

Okay jeanette,

Great! When the hands are hold together this way, it can indicate that the person is in a 'passive' mode - and usually the eyes will tell you the rest of the story.

When the fingers of both hads are intertwingled, I think it indicates more sensory 'activity' (you can think about: exploring fingertips feeding the mind) - because then it becomes are open gesture.

(But again, one should be aware of cultural variations, etc.)

How does this sound to you???
And what is your thought on this 'hand gesture'?

Hi Martijin,
I thought it could mean the person doing this was, in a nice way, humouring what had been said by the other person and mulling over it, getting ready to point out nicely where they were wrong. I also think the person doing this is interested and enjoying what they are hearing.
Thanks,
Jeanette.

Hi Jeanette,
If I knew which hand was dominant, I would be curious about why one hand was "covering" the other. And the other curled in a fist. As in Martijn's sample image.

Does this person want to hit something with that fist and the other hand is the civilized self - staying contained? Or is that hand curled in to hide something and the other hand covers it, still protected or contained. Something held in.

Of course, this is a pose most likely suggested by the photographer and not based on mood, so the facial expressions don't help.

Hi Patti,

Hi Patti,

Yes, I think you mentioned another interesting aspect of this type of hand gesture: 'which hand is on top?'

Assuming that the man in the picture is right handed (as the large majority of us are right handed), it is typical to see that his left hand is on top of his right hand (I guess that sort of reinforces my association with a 'passive' mode).

Just another association. hand gestures Icon_biggrin

Hi Jeannette,

It appears to me that what you described is very much directly the result of to the specific situation that you notified.

For, I expect that is unlikely that the meaning of this hand gesture can usually be related to such a detailed type of response. Regarding your association that the person is 'interested' and 'enjoying'... could that also be the result of the facial expresson that you observed in the situation?

hand gestures Empty explanation

Post  jeanette Wed Aug 04, 2010 7:31 pm

Hi,
This was someone I do not really know very well and she was having a cup of tea with me at my kitchen table and we were just talking about everyday things in general, when she started to ask me about palmistry, various questions. She was very pleasant, but I don't think she thought it something to take serious. So when she asked a question and I proceeded to explain she sat with her hands like that. She is right handed and she had the same postition as the hands of the man in the photo, except the right was over the left. She left saying our conversation had been so interesting, but I think I detected a small amusing smile. Thanks for the replies.
Jeanette.

Hi Jeanette,

Thank you for describing the situation where you observed this hand gesture.

Yes, maybe this hand gesture perfectly reflects the 'attitude' of your conversation partner: she has been listening with interest, (EDIT:) but maybe her interest was 'passive'... for your experience sounds like she didn't listen with an 'open heart'!?

Makes sense now?

hi Jeanette,
as you were talking about palmistry, maybe she didn't want you to see her palms, perhaps she was nervous of what you might see!

Hi Lynn,
I think you are right. I was also thinking that by covering her left hand she was hiding her inner thoughts.
Thanks,
Jeanette.

In one of my books I've bought recently of body language, the author states quiet clearly that body language analysis can not always be used in all situations and in all events. He said that people will do something with no reason psychological reason or no hidden agenda.

Hello jenette, Smile

I would like to share my interpretation right here. It is a usual gesture of a psychologist when he listens the life history of his patient. Indeed, This gesture does not show that he/she is listening to you. but, observing your way of thinking and your knowledge without hearing you. because, when the opponent seems to less intellectual than him/her, he/she will become relax without uttering any words. At the mean while, they intrude and judging your mind sharply without diverting attention. For example, when a lover speaks lot of foolish stuffs, the male partner can changes his gesture in this way and start thinking about her innocency or even ogle her by without listening to her statements.

secondly, Hiding the hands by any means ie., holding one hand on another behind the body or putting the hands into the packet or likewise above explained gesture indicates hiding the inner feeling/truth.(Their statements remain lie if they interact much with this kind of hiding hand gestures)

I agree with you Martijn. I use this gesture all the time sitting around with people. Usually there is a moving/ touching of the chin with the clasped hands while I'm thinking deeper about what they are saying.

Hi,
Rigjht thanks, but maybe I should be ashamed to admit, that when I adopt that hand position I am finding it hard to understand what is being said and I think this hand position looks intelligent and that is why I do it.

Hello jeanatte, Smile

That can be the case when you are alone/ mull over something alone .

If you listening the seminar with this gesture, it means you're interested on that topic and listening seriously.

But, My earlier interpretation is about when two person interacting in a room as you explained the situation in your earlier posts.
