How your hands can help your brains to solve a problem!

Post  Martijn (admin) on Fri Jun 10, 2011 1:48 pm

CHICAGO, JUNE 2011 – New psychology research suggests that hand gestures unconsciously influence people’s problem solving strategy! Two experiments have shown that when people are confronted with a problem to solve, they don’t just use their brains but the rest of their bodies, too. “Being able to use your body in problem solving alters the way you solve the problems,” says University of Wisconsin psychology professor Martha Alibali. “Body movements are one of the resources we bring to cognitive processes.”

The study suggests that when using hand gestures, the brain is stimulated to use a verbal strategy for solving a problem, while, when the hands are 'in control' the brain is stimulated to use an abstract strategy for solving a problem!

hi Martijn;

a good post on mind body connection. I think we have holographic memory and when we access or construct memory, motor neuron are fired automatically by brain and this is two way process.

Similarly we can anchor our or others mind to to access certain feelings and states by hand gestures. I saw lot of hypnotist doing it. It seems we arrange our memories in a common way in a culture because certain hand gestures illicit certain response in a cultures. Also a person with a good body language (especially hand gestures) can tell his story with using much less words.

NLP has done lot of work on this and you can check at following link.

With practice, your memory can be helped by holding your hands in a prayer like position but with just the finger tips touching, and looking slightly to the left. It takes a bit of practice but I find it helps me remember names and similar words. Sorry I cannot remember the source of this! I did not believe it at first but now I know it helps usually. For remembering names I sometimes go through the alphabet too.

I edit my question, it was not understandable :p

People have different cultures, with different body languages.
Then could we think that inside a culture that uses a lot their hands, they can better assimilate (somehow) than another culture that does not / barely use body language?
