Polydactyly in the Mole (& Giant Panda): linked with testosterone - not a real finger!

Earlier this week paleontologists from the University of Zurich have uncovered a new theory about the underlying biological causes that are responsible for the mole’s extra thumb.
Interestlingly, the Mole's extra thumb is not a real finger... it's a sesamoid bone - just like is seen in the so-called extra thumb of the Giant Panda (+ the red panda!). But formally, it is not a real finger (it's more like a pad with a rather unusually large sesamoid bone).

PS. The Swiss research reports a link between the extra thumb & testosterone in moles; but a likewise link can be seen for the occurence of polydactlyly in humans... because this phenomenon is more seen among males (compared to females), and about 10x more common among blacks (compared to whites).
